Romtelecom and Fon Join Forces To Give Customers Global WiFi Access

JULY 2nd 2014. MADRID & BUCHAREST.- Fon, the global WiFi network and Romtelecom, leading communications services provider in Romania, announced today a partnership to offer Romtelecom customers free access to WiFi hotspots in Romania and to almost 13 million WiFi hotspots abroad.

All Romtelecom Internet customers with a compatible router (currently Huawei HG 658) can become Fon members for free: in exchange for sharing a portion of their own bandwidth at home, they will receive free access to shared broadband connections of other Romtelecom customers in Romania and of Fon customers in other countries. Romtelecom subscribers just need to activate the Fon functionality by calling 1930 or by accessing the Romtelecom self care online application to receive their username and password and connect.

“The excellence in customer experience is our constant focus – and mobility has become essential to our customers, therefore we add to our services portfolio the possibility to travel with fixed Romtelecom Internet, in the country and abroad, through the Fon option. This is an accessible alternative available to all the company’s customers who need online access in their travels around the country and abroad. In other words, a customer who, at home, shares his own Internet connection, will have, in his turn, access to the fixed Internet provided by others within the Fon community”, stated Mathias Hannel, Chief Commercial Officer – Residential Segment Romtelecom and COSMOTE Romania

Fon technology makes it possible to broadcast two powerful, dedicated WiFi signals from a broadband Internet source. One signal is encrypted and private. The other signal is public but only accessible via password to other registered Fon members.

“The Fon WiFi community has been expanding rapidly over the last few years. Especially in Europe we have an increasingly dense Fon WiFi coverage mainly achieved together with leading telcos. We are very pleased that now in Romania, a fast growing market, we were able to join forces with the leading communications service provider. Together with Romtelecom we will build Romania’s largest WiFi network” said Alex Puregger, COO of Fon.

Presently with almost 13 million hotspots, Fon is the world’s largest WiFi network. In countries such as the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Croatia and Brazil, customers already share their broadband connection and receive free access to millions hotspots in the Fon network for free.
