Access to Fon WiFi Hotspots Can Now Be Purchased on Windows 10
- Windows 10 users will be able to easily pay for WiFi access at millions of residential Fon hotspots, in addition to thousands of premium WiFi hotspots recently added to the wider Fon network
- This marks a new milestone in how Fon, together with their Carrier Partners, monetises WiFi
8 NOVEMBER 2016. MADRID – Fon is excited to announce that customers will be able to purchase WiFi passes via the Windows Store, providing a brand new way to access the world’s largest WiFi network and offering a seamless, secure user experience.
Fon builds the world’s largest WiFi network together with leading carriers, offering paid WiFi access at more than 20 million residential hotspots across five continents. Now, Windows 10 users who are not already entitled to free access as members of the Fon Community will be able to get paid access in a very easy way, simply by using their Windows Store credentials for purchase. The roll-out starts today and will gradually be extended throughout the Fon network.
Windows 10 users with registered payment details will be able to pay with just one click. These customers will not need to login every time they start a session or go to a different Fon Hotspot – connectivity will be seamlessly enabled by Windows 10 throughout the validity of their WiFi pass.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Fon to bring a better WiFi experience to millions of hotspot locations globally,” said Microsoft’s Windows Store Core Program Management Director, Gregg Harmon. “Windows Store is known as the place to find the latest apps, games, movies, music and more, and we’re excited to enable our customers to seamlessly pay and connect using their existing accounts.”
“Today, more than 70% of smartphone and laptop traffic goes over WiFi in most countries. Customers love WiFi whenever it’s easy to connect – but they also hate it when it’s cumbersome,” says Alex Puregger, Fon CEO.
“We think that it’s our task to make Fon WiFi accessible and improve the connection experience so that everybody loves WiFi. That’s why today I am extremely proud to announce that we have worked with our carrier partners to tackle that problem together. From now on, Windows 10 users will have a better WiFi experience at Fon Spots. At the same time we help our Fon carrier partners with another challenge, and that is how to better monetize WiFi networks. So, it’s really a win-win for everybody.”
The announcement comes at a time when Fon has started expanding its footprint beyond residential hotspots. Together with Fon’s carrier partners, the company has added numerous premium WiFi locations to the broader Fon network. This includes 50 airports in Europe in addition to thousands of other public WiFi hotspot locations all over the world – partly operated by Fon carrier partners, partly operated by third parties. This is a key element of Fon’s vision to be able to offer customers a wide network with a coherent user experience.
Access to these hotspots can be achieved seamlessly from Fon’s connection app, Fon-supported connection apps by partners, and now via the Windows 10 OS integration.
In the coming years, Fon predicts significant growth in both the size of its network of residential and public hotspots, as well as usage of the network driven by more seamless connection experiences.
