What is Fon?

Fon is the world’s largest community WiFi network with millions of Fon Spots around the world, growing everyday.

What is a Fon Spot?

Fon Spots are WiFi hotspots created by Fon. Partners’ routers broadcast a WiFi signal, making a Fon Spot.

How does it work?

Fon Spots are made up of two separate, dedicated WiFi signals – one private signal just for the user and one shared signal for other members and visitors to the network. It allows to safely share a bit of WiFi at home with others and, in return, free connectivity wherever there is a Fon Spot. All the Fon Spots together create a crowdsourced network where everyone who contributes connects for free.

Where can I find a Fon Spot?

You can find Fon Spots using our map to locate the ones around you.

How can I identify a Fon Spot?

Our hotspots usually have the name of Fon together with the name of our partner. For example: BTWiFi-with-Fon, KPN Fon, Oi WiFi Fon, etc.

What do I need to connect to a Fon Spot?

All you need is a WiFi-capable device and a Fon account or a Fon WiFi App subscription. Fon accounts are created during the purchase of a pass

  • Once the account is created or you’re logged in, you will be able to choose your payment method. Follow the instructions to complete your purchase

3. Being an eligible customer of a Fon Partner:

Purchasing a pass

What kinds of passes do you offer?

Access passes allow you to connect to a Fon Spot for a given number of consecutive minutes/hours/days. We offer the following types of access passes:

1-hour: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 60 consecutive minutes. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it with a maximum of 1 year after the purchase date.

1-day: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 24 consecutive hours. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it.

5-day: This is a bundle of five one-day passes that can be used at all hotspots on the Fon network. The first one-day pass will expire after 24 hours. The four remaining one-day passes will be credited to your account for future connections. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, all five one-day passes will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use them.

30-day: This pass lets you use a hotspot in the Fon network for up to 30 consecutive days. If you have time remaining from a previous pass when you buy it, it will be credited to your account and won’t expire until you decide to use it.

Passes can be used on the network where they were purchased only.

Can I connect to a Fon Spot using more than one device at the same time?

Yes. At the same Fon Spot, you can connect using more than one device at the same time (up to a maximum of 3 connections per Fon account). However, at different Fon Spots it is not possible to connect using the same account at the same time.

If you are using your pass on our partnered hotspots in Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Croatia, Spain, Italy or Germany, you are limited to one connection per Fon account.

Do I need to log into my Fon account each time I want to access the internet?

If you are a pass user, you will be required to login every time you connect to the internet through a Fon Spot. However, we recommend that you mark the “Remember me on this computer” checkbox.

How do I disconnect from a Fon Spot?

To disconnect from a Fon Spot, switch off the WiFi on your device.

Is the Fon login secure?

Yes. Our login process is SSL-secured. SSL (Secure Socket Layer) was developed in order to send confidential data over the internet securely. The system ensures that the data cannot be read or manipulated by other people during transmission. The 2048-bit RSA encryption specifies the strength of the encryption and is currently the most secure level of encryption and thus an integral part of the high security standard of your hotspot access.

Can anyone else read the data on my hard drive while connected to a Fon Spot?

No. The authentication process between your laptop, smartphone, or tablet and the login page is secured via SSL encryption. All data is therefore transmitted in encrypted format. Fon Spots use the 802.11b/g/n standard as a wireless protocol for internet access. Firewalls protect users at our hotspots from harmful internet-based hacker attacks. The HTTPS protocol (HTTP over SSL), which is supported by all current web browsers, provides a secure path for the transmission of sensitive data, logging into the company network, or intranet. Once connected, we suggest you use the SSL version of the services you want to use. For example websites using SSL have a URL that starts with “https.”

Can my data be read or intercepted while connected to a Fon Spot?

No. The authentication process between your laptop, smartphone, or tablet and the login page  is secured via SSL encryption. All data is therefore transmitted in encrypted format. The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) procedure was developed in order to guarantee that your authentication data is secured and cannot be tapped. The system thereby ensures that the data cannot be read or manipulated by other people during transmission. Once connected, we suggest you use the SSL version of the services you want to use. For example, websites using SSL have a URL that starts with “https.”
