Fon and OTE Start Rolling Out a Crowdsourced WiFi Network in Greece

WiFi is “liberated” through a notorious viral campaign developed by OTE

DECEMBER 4th 2014. ATHENS & MADRID.- OTE, the leading telco in Greece, in collaboration with Fon, the global WiFi network, now offers users the opportunity to “liberate” their WiFi. All OTE Double Play subscribers are now able to become Fon members for free. In exchange for sharing a portion of their own bandwidth at home, they receive free access to shared broadband connections of other OTE customers in Greece and to more than 13 million Fon Spots in other countries.

The new service called OTE My WiFi has been heavily promoted around the country. In a viral campaign developed by Ogilvy, an “anonymous” group of people sets WiFi free and declares “WiFipendenceday”. They also “invaded” OTE headquarters in Athens and the placed stickers and spray-painted around the city.

OTE My WiFi ensures customers great new benefits such as:

  • Extended WiFi coverage, as the OTE My WiFi community of users already includes more than 150,000 active Fon Spots all over Greece. At the same time OTE Double Play subscribers activating the service become members of an international community, gaining WiFi internet access completely free of charge in Greece as well as worldwide. Fon already operates in many countries around the world, providing access to its users to over 13 million Fon Spots.
  • Security, since each user connected to a WiFi Fon Spot has a distinct connection (as opposed to most free open WiFi networks).
  • Quality connection, because connected users can enjoy unlimited Internet surfing, without overloading the network.
